The view from the church balcony

Picture a room packed with almost fifty kids shouting in Arabic, running in circles, and spilling snacks on the floor. Well, that was our day today for about 4 hours.

We started Vacation Bible School today with the Syrian refugee children that live in the neighborhood. It was held in an apartment, in a building that the church rents for ministry purposes.

The door handles are very ornate, attached to beautifully carved wooden doors

Although the first two flights of stairs were in good condition, the ones just above our room were not. Rubble is a common sight in many buildings.

Once the kids started to arrive, we began to sing with them. It was so cool to see the joy on their faces as they sang gospel songs!

They all sang in accented English, belting out songs like "I've Got the Joy, Joy, Joy, Joy..." and "Jesus Loves Me." Then they sang a few gospel songs in Arabic.

After that, one of the young men led the memory verse time with the help of a translator.

The kids shouted in Arabic together, repeating after the translator.

Next, we served a snack, and led games to entertain half of the group while the other half completed a craft. We played balloon volleyball and made it harder each round, until the kids had to hit the ball with their foreheads!

Our kids joined in the fun

This little girl managed to get a balloon all to herself!

After the games, Dad wrapped up the lesson by teaching about true repentance, using a diagram to illustrate the concept.

Please pray that we will get sufficient rest for the week ahead. A small room full of screaming, excited kids gets overwhelming really fast!

More importantly, please pray that the seeds that have been sown in these kids' hearts will bear fruit and not be snatched away by the devil.
